Hey, I'm Reuben

Father of two in Queens, NY. Engineering Manager at Business Insider. Runner, photographer, and someone who believes the small things we do every day matter more than the big gestures we do once.

What I'm About

I write about the intersection of work, family, and the systems that help us show up better for both. Whether it's simple habits that make me a better dad, figuring out how my ADHD brain works, or the power of consistent journaling, I'm always looking for what works — not what sounds good on paper.

My latest obsession is photography. I shoot on a Sony A6000 with either a 35mm f/1.8 or Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 lens, mostly capturing everyday moments with my kids. There's something magic about freezing those fleeting seconds before they grow up too fast.

I'm also a runner — 13 years now, with several marathons under my belt, and a Half Ironman back in 2018. The half marathon is my favorite distance to train for and race. Running has taught me that consistency beats intensity, a lesson that shows up everywhere in my life now.

My Work

I manage a team of engineers at Business Insider, where I've been working for over 10 years. My path here wasn't straight — I started in politics and legislative activism after college, switched to tech in 2010, spent years as a software engineer, and eventually moved into management. I continue to contribute code regularly to stay sharp and connected to the craft.

What I love most about leading engineers is helping people navigate technical challenges while growing in their careers. It's problem-solving at two levels: the code and the human.

The Daily Practice

I've kept a daily journal for 6+ years and read at least 10 minutes almost every day. These small, boring habits have been more transformative than any big life change I've ever made. I write about systems like this because they work — not just for me, but for the people who try them.

What's Next

I want to run another marathon before I turn 40. Take my kids to Israel. Dream of writing a children's book someday (yes, really). Really just keep going all in on whatever captures my attention next.

But mostly, I want to keep showing up. For my family, my team, and anyone who finds something useful in what I share here.
